They are an insect…a unique form of insect called a winged beetle!
An insect has six legs, a head, thorax, and abdomen.
I didn’t realize!
My kids learned loads of scientific information about insects, and specifically fireflies with the book How to Survive as a Firefly. Here are just a few cool facts…
- The scientific name for the most common North American firefly is Photinus pyralis
- Some firefly species do not glow at all.
- There are more than 2000 different species of Lightning bugs worldwide.
- Lightning bugs go through a type of complete metamorphosis.

The basis of this entertaining book is that an older more mature firefly is trying to teach a group of young firefly larvae what they need to know to survive.
My children were entertained and laughing as they learned fun facts about complete metamorphosis and aggressive mimicry. Plus, the illustrations are hilarious!
