Fireflies are such unique insects and captivate children across the world every year. During the summer months, countless children observe the firefly’s bioluminescence through glass jars before releasing these wonders of nature back into the night.

But how much do your kids really know about the fascinating firefly?

I’m thrilled to have discovered the perfect book for learning more about these nocturnal creatures!

A positive review was not required. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I only choose to share resources that I would use with my own family and those that I believe other families will enjoy.

Did you know that fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are not bugs?

It’s true!

They are an insect…a unique form of insect called a winged beetle!

An insect has six legs, a head, thorax, and abdomen.

I didn’t realize!

My kids learned loads of scientific information about insects, and specifically fireflies with the book How to Survive as a Firefly. Here are just a few cool facts…

  • The scientific name for the most common North American firefly is Photinus pyralis
  • Some firefly species do not glow at all.
  • There are more than 2000 different species of Lightning bugs worldwide.
  • Lightning bugs go through a type of complete metamorphosis.
  • Fireflies that do glow use bioluminescence which is the light produced by living things.
  • Scientists use the glowing firefly chemicals to research diseases!
  • Adult lightning bugs Do Not Eat!

The basis of this entertaining book is that an older more mature firefly is trying to teach a group of young firefly larvae what they need to know to survive.

My children were entertained and laughing as they learned fun facts about complete metamorphosis and aggressive mimicry. Plus, the illustrations are hilarious!
