Incorporating the Brave Writer Lifestyle
You mean I can watch movies with my kids and it counts towards language arts?
YES!
The Brave Writer program is more of a lifestyle. It’s all about building relationships with your family while incorporating a rich environment of language arts. This rich environment includes…
- Poetry Teatime
- Reading Aloud
- Big Juicy Conversations – Reading books and watching movies are amazing ways to effortlessly incorporate conversations into your family.
- Freewriting
- Nature Journaling
- Writing Projects
- Art Appreciation
- Copywork
- Dictation
- Language Games
Did you know that movies fall into the category of language arts? Movies, television, and theater performances are fantastic ways to keep your kids involved in story, characterization, and script writing.
Why?
Because your kiddos are listening to vocabulary, and language in correct context by different people. Also, the plot can be more easily understood in movies as well as climax, archetypes, characters, setting, irony, cultural assumptions, and comic timing.
Movie night becomes a big conversation in our family!
Comparing Books and Their Movies
Here’s the key to using books and movies together.
- Ask loads of questions
- Stop the film at crucial points and see if your children can predict what will happen next.
- Watch the same movie multiple times. Each time your children watch it, they will be able to point out more differences between the book and the movie.
As a family, we LOVE to read a book and then watch its corresponding movie or multiple versions of the same movie. My son is notorious for being the best or worst movie critique. He points out Every. Single. deviation from the original book… Out. Loud…DURING the MOVIE!
I find my son’s comparisons to be an excellent way to tell his knowledge of the book.
It’s like an oral book report!
But with movie snacks and cozy blankets!

Homeschool Art Appreciation and the Brave Writer Lifestyle
The Jeremy Brett Hound of the Baskervilles is also a great movie version of the Sherlock Holmes tale. (In fact, I love all the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes productions.)
Do you guys read and watch Shakespeare? That has always been a favorite of mine – reading the play and watching the different movie productions.
We also like The Invention of Hugo Cabret and the movie Hugo, Jumanji (name of book & movie), Percy Jackson (the first two books are movies). We watch a lot of movies to compare to books and my boys are so much like me in that they complain “that’s not how it happened in the book!” Pinned.
Yes! Those were all Fantastic movie/book combos! We always try to find a corresponding movie to each book we read. It definitely adds an element of fun.
