Winter Hike with Friends

Winter has come to East Tenneesee and while it’s still considered fall (a minor technicality, really as the Winter Solstice is only a few days away) the temperatures agree with me. At 30 degrees on our favorite mountain, it is winter my friend. The cold is nipping at our noses and we have broken out the scarves, mittens, and winter coats!

Imagine the thrill and delight we had when our friends from the big city came to visit us here on the farm! It was so lovely to sip hot cocoa and reminisce over seasons gone. Before we moved to the farm this was a family that we saw daily. Yet, this was the first time we had seen each other in 8 months!

One of the activities they requested was a nature hike. Naturally we were happy to oblige….once everyone was bundled up and prepared for the cold wind on the mountain.

Our son led the way over streams, across logs and over bridges. He was as happy as a lark showing his friends the way up the mountain. The children discovered snail shells, river rocks, mountain trout, mushrooms, and lovely golden leaves every where they turned. However, we didn’t make it to the top of the mountain. Little legs get tired very easily, you see, and our smallest hiker decided she was done when we reached the bridge. She was so done, that she had to be carried back down the trail! Our winter hike was still hailed a success and we headed back to the farm for another round of hot cocoa. I’m so happy we got to share our favorite trail with our favorite people.
