A Very Frozen Birthday

This week our daughter, Jade, turned 3 years old. If you happen to know where all that time went, please let me know, because I haven’t a clue. It seems only yesterday that she was a newborn in my arms. But there you have it, our littlest blessing is growing up. So, we planned to have her a little party.

With this being a 3 year olds party, we didn’t want to go over board. But I wanted a little flare. This is to be a Frozen themed birthday party as I had it on the highest authorities that the majority of presents would be Frozen themed and since the movie “Frozen” is Jades all time favorite. I decided to make a cupcake tower complete with a Frozen themed tutu…… did I really just type “Frozen” five times? Let it go! Let it go!

If you want to recreate this Frozen themed tutu you will need the following:

  • 3 yards of light blue tulle
  • 1 yard of dark blue tulle
  • 1 yard of white tulle
  • elastic band
  • 5/8 inch (or smaller) dark blue ribbon of your choice (I used a roll of two different shades of dark blue)
  • Assorted glittery snowflake foam stickers
  • Hot glue

I cut the elastic band to the length that I needed to fit Jades small size and then sewed the ends together to make the basis for her tutu. Then I cut the tulle and the ribbon into strips 24 inches long (or twice the length that you want the finished tutu to be). I finished with cutting each strip of tulle 2 inches wide.

I picked up a set of paper mache hat boxes in descended sizes at a local craft store. The set came with 5 boxes but I chose to only use three of them. I painted the three boxes and their lids white with some acrylic paint I had on hand.

While the paint on the hat boxes dried, I went to work with knotting the strips of tulle into a pattern of colors. I used a slip knot for each strip of tulle. I made sure to put the dark blue on either side of the white to make a nice contrast. There are 5 such dark blue/white sections on the tutu. The majority of the tutu is the lighter blue tulle.

Once the hat boxes had dried I slipped the tutu onto the base to get an idea of how it was looking. From there I tied the strips of ribbon into all of the dark blue areas and then proceeded to hot glue the foam snowflakes around the entire tutu. I also added a strip of ribbon around the two smaller hat boxes.

I made homemade cupcakes with an Ombre Swirl Buttercream Frosting. I followed the recipe from Two Sisters Crafting and they turned out beautifully. Click here to see their recipe. Everyone at the party raved over these cupcakes!

But the proof is in the pudding so to speak…I made 48 cupcakes and only 6 made it back home with us after the party. Jade indulged in 2 cupcakes herself!

Everyone had a blast at her party. The kids even got to make and take home Frozen colored Fairy Dough! It is so quick and easy to make. Only three ingredients needed!

  • 1 cup conditioner (we used strawberry scented and it was lovely)
  • 2 1/2 cups of cornstarch
  • a few drops of food coloring (we used the same blue coloring as the buttercream frosting)

This was such a great day and great party. Jade enjoyed all of the food and fun…not to mention all of her presents. She was taken aback by her first bicycle. To begin with she had loads of help! After only a short time she was zipping right along without any help. I so enjoyed seeing the joy on her face!
