Welcome to a new Week in the Life of Unschoolers where I post all about all of the books we’ve been reading and all of the shenanigans we’ve been up to over the past week. By “we” I mean our 8 year old son Gabriel, our 3 year old daughter Jade and myself. So, here we go!
We are a family of readers. We love books. Reading is a huge part of our days. Our books tend to be very eclectic too, ranging from preK books through to young adult books. This week was no different. We read You Are My Miracle, The Hat, Frosty the Snowman, Happy, Happy Chinese New Year, and Mossy. Gabriel is still reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, How to Train Your Dragon, and he started the Star Wars Republic Commando: True Colors this week.
Gabriel received a Hape Early Melodies Guitar for Christmas. He has been watching YouTube videos and learning chords this week. He’s really enjoying it!
I have been knitting more and more since the New Year. I find it very relaxing. I have started a Sky Blanket, Fingerless Mitts, a Scarf and a Hat! All of this knitting hasn’t gone unnoticed. Gabriel has been watching me and this week he asked me to teach him to knit. He wants to make his own blanket. So now we set aside time to knit together.
The children have been in the kitchen most days. They have made Strawberry Pancakes, and Oreo Cheesecake bites! I love watching them confidently measuring and chopping.
Jade likes to help me with dinner. She was excellent at stirring the Cornbread batter…and helping to eat it. Speaking of 3 year old’s…does anyone else’s 3 year old make 10 wardrobe changes each day? Maybe? The laundry is getting crazy around here. Last weekend I did 11 full loads! There is only 4 of us! How is that possible?
Both children have been playing up a storm with the Play-Doh sets they got for Christmas. Jade loves making cookies and cupcakes while Gabriel makes more practical things…like phones and swords.
Gabriel enjoys playing the math game Prodigy on the computer each day. He likes to sit by my bedroom window playing this game…and everyday this week he has had a visitor. We have had a Red Bellied Woodpecker in our neighborhood! This woodpecker is particularly fond of this maple tree outside our window. This has led to discussions about habitats, food, migrations, and life cycles.
The kids spent a whole day building with nothing but Kapla Blocks! They made a bridge, a car garage and a battlement of protection against the zombies that were attacking their LEGO Men… Yeah, I don’t know where that one came from.
The Kinetic Sand has also been getting loads of use. Jade loves using the molds to make castles and bridges. Then Gabriel got involved and suddenly the sand was no longer sand but tar oozing up from the bowels of the earth consuming everything in it’s path…I was wondering how long it would take before he was mixing LEGO’s with the sand. Turns out…not long at all!
There was loads of LEGO play this week too! After watching a documentary on the arctic, Gabriel proceeded to built a LEGO Polar Bear. FYI, he’s a big fan of NatGeo Wild. After reading a chapter of How to Train Your Dragon, he built a baby LEGO Dragon!
While Gabriel prefers his pretend play with LEGO’s, Jade is becoming more of an arts and crafts kinda girl. She LOVES painting and anything to do with scissors and glue. All of this also requires a bath directly afterwards…can you say, “MESSY!”
The children built structures out of Marshmallows and Toothpicks one morning. Gabriel said his structure was the “Burrow”…you know, the Weasley’s house from the book Harry Potter? The best part of the whole building process was eating the marshmallows from our structures. I highly recommend this fun and inventive way to create.
Jade and I put together 3 out of her 4 new Lisa Frank Puzzles. It’s quite surprising to me how easily she matches up the pieces.
We had friends over every afternoon. Some days the kids all raided the costume trunks and played pretend. On another day the children worked on building their own rockets out of scrap cardboard, wood, and plastic.
We enjoyed being outside every afternoon. The temperatures are finally starting to cool off so you’ll be seeing us bundled up in our outdoor pictures more. I hope you enjoyed your glimpse into our Unschooling adventure. No day is quite like another…and that’s how we like it.
